WHEN LOUIS CK released his special through his website for the measly sum of $5, many comedians took notice.
Now comedians like Aziz Ansari, Chelsea Handler and Marc Maron are turning to Netflix to distribute their specials.
As such, the streaming service now has a vast offering of specials from both British and American comedians.
Here are eight hilarious specials that are sure to make you laugh.
1. Zach Galifianakis – Live At The Purple Onion
Before his name became synonymous with wolf packs and Between Two Ferns, Zach Galifianakis was a stand-up comedian.
In 2006, he released Live At The Purple Onion, a low-key special in which Galifianakis periodically plays the piano and unleashes genius non-sequiturs. Watch it and get an insight into his brilliant, brilliant mind.
2. Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats
You may be familiar with Peretti via her role in Brooklyn Nine Nine or through her sassy Twitter presence.
But are you familiar with her stand-up? If not, you can remedy that immediately. Her debut special One of the Greats is hilarious and meta, and will make you hanker for more Peretti in your life. Get familiar before she truly does become one of the greats.
3. Mike Birgbiglia – My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend
A heartfelt and frank exploration of his personal relationships, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is as good an introduction as any to anyone yet to be acquainted with Mike Birbiglia. (Can’t get enough? Here is a selection of his appearances on This American Life.)
4. Joan Rivers – Don’t Start With Me
Remind yourself of the rich legacy left by Rivers with this 2012 special that shows her still at the peak of her powers.
5. Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive
Netflix actually has three Aziz Ansari comedy specials to choose from, but we heartily recommend his most recent, which features him ruminating on such heady topics as love and marriage in the digital age.
6. Reggie Watts: Why $#!+ So Crazy?
He was recently announced as the bandleader on James Corden’s forthcoming late night show and with good reason: not only is Reggie Watts a very funny man, he is an exceptional musician.
His comedy is a wonderful and whimsical blend of traditional stand-up, music, beatboxing and more. You’re unlikely to see anything else quite like it, but it will 100% leave you with a smile on your face.
7. Richard Herring: What Is Love, Anyway?
In this show, British comedian Richard Herring examines the very concept of love through the prism of his own romantic experiences. Immensely enjoyable.
8. Louis C.K. – Live At The Beacon Theatre
Because what list could exclude Louis CK?
We’ll spare you the usual fawning spiel. You know the drill by now.
